Goldstone Federation Vision:
To provide a stimulating,
high quality learning and
teaching environment for all children
within a calm, caring and co-operative
atmosphere.
Our curriculum is built to enable pupils to SHINE.
In Mathematics…
We want our children to be happy, confident mathematicians.
We nurture confidence and a love of mathematics.
We help children reach their full potential; we believe every child is entitled to a good mathematical education.
We promote a, ‘can do’ attitude to mathematics without a fear of making mistakes.
Cheswardine School takes great pride in the quality of its mathematics provision. Our leaders and teachers possess a deep understanding of individual pupils and their learning processes, allowing us to tailor educational experiences effectively. We maintain high expectations for all pupils, irrespective of their starting points or specific learning challenges. To support this, our leadership team invests in continuous professional development and incorporates evidence-based teaching practices informed by current research. As a result, pupils consistently perform well in Mathematics, as evidenced by termly assessments. Where gaps in understanding are identified, teachers provide targeted support through individual or group interventions, using concrete manipulatives, worked examples, and pictorial representations. Pupils also benefit from monitored over learning opportunities through digital platforms such as Mathletics, Numbots, Times Table Rockstars (TTRS), and Nessy.
The school utilises the White Rose Mathematics (WRM) scheme due to its foundation in proven research methodologies. This scheme emphasises reasoning skills and employs a carefully designed spiral curriculum, fostering pupils’ use of mathematical vocabulary and a variety of representations. Teachers confidently adapt the curriculum to meet the specific needs of pupils, guided by formative assessments conducted during and at the end of lessons.
Our teachers have also undertaken additional professional development through WRM, which has informed the development of our Crucial Knowledge framework. This framework clearly outlines the curriculum intent for each unit and is shared with parents, supported by the WRM home mathematics resources. Currently, Cheswardine School is reviewing its Crucial Knowledge documents for Mathematics to enhance precision, continuity, and progression across all areas of the subject.
Retrieval practice is embedded in every mathematics lesson through activities such as Flashback 4s and Mathletics, contributing positively to our pupils’ achievements.
